An Exclusive Interview with Gauri Khan
By Home Publication

When Gauri Khan speaks of design, it isn’t with the detachment of an observer but the intimacy of someone who has lived and breathed it into every space she’s touched. Over the years, she’s quietly built a design legacy, one that favours depth over drama, subtle elegance over spectacle, and feeling over formula. At Gauri Khan Designs (GKD), every project is a reflection of a story-layered, intentional, and deeply personal.

The Evolution of Gauri Khan Designs

“My journey into interior design was a very organic one,” Gauri shares, as we sit down for this exclusive conversation. What began as a personal curiosity-a desire to shape environments that resonate emotionally, gradually took root as a professional calling. “It started with a deep love for aesthetics and an innate desire to create spaces that are both beautiful and emotionally resonant.”

Today, Gauri Khan Designs spans an impressive portfolio-from intimate residences to expansive commercial projects, but the thread that ties them all together remains unchanged: a sense of narrative. “We’ve grown in scale, yes, but our essence remains constant-designing spaces that tell a story.”

Defining the GKD Aesthetic

How does one define the Gauri Khan signature? In three words: timeless, sophisticated, expressive. “I believe in creating spaces that outlast trends,” she says. “Quiet luxury is powerful-it doesn’t shout, but it lingers.” Her spaces speak through materiality, form, and emotion. They aren’t merely seen; they are felt.

For Gauri, designing isn’t a surface-level practice, it’s about crafting an environment that lives and breathes. “It’s about designing for the soul, not just the eye,” she emphasises. And that intent is apparent in everything from her curated textures and artful lighting to the subtleties that often go unnoticed but are deeply felt.

Celebrity Homes to Global Projects

From crafting personal sanctuaries for the country’s most recognisable names to transforming retail and hospitality spaces around the globe, Gauri’s approach always begins with listening. “It starts by deeply understanding the client’s personality and aspirations,” she explains. Only then does the layering begin, a thoughtful curation of texture, tone, and detail that aligns with both vision and vibe.

Her work resists replication, favouring individuality and emotion. “Whether it’s a home, a restaurant, or a retail space, we create with empathy,” she says. “Design must reflect the people who inhabit the space, it should never be one-size-fits-all.”

On Designing for the Senses

For Gauri, a space should be a sensory experience-an immersive tapestry of sound, scent, touch, and light. “Design should engage all the senses,” she says. “Texture, lighting, acoustics, even scent, these elements aren’t accessories, they’re essentials.”

She sees materials and lighting as tools for storytelling. A velvet accent wall, the dimming of a pendant lamp, or the quiet echo of a hallway-each decision is deliberate. “A space should feel as good as it looks,” she reiterates. And that sensuality is central to the GKD identity.

Experience Centres as Design Destinations

Never one to conform to convention, Gauri reimagined the typical showroom when she launched her GKD Experience Centres. “I never wanted a traditional showroom,” she explains. “I wanted people to step into spaces that felt lived in, like homes in motion.”

Each corner is curated to spark imagination. Furniture, lighting, accessories—nothing is placed for effect; everything is composed to evoke a way of living. “It’s about allowing people to walk into our philosophy, and feel the layers of it,” she adds. With each centre, Gauri turns design into an encounter, not just a transaction.

Delhi Calling

When asked about the Delhi GKD Experience Centre, Gauri lights up. “Delhi is a city that loves drama, detail, and elegance,” she smiles. Inspired by the capital’s rich design language, the space is layered in sculptural lighting, muted palettes, and rich textures—creating pockets of unexpected delight.

“It’s intimate but opulent,” she explains. “There’s a kind of poetic tension there, where timeless meets modern, and structure meets softness.” It’s also a reflection of the city’s creative energy. “Delhi has a way of influencing you. I wanted the space to echo that spirit.”

The India Lens

Deeply rooted in her appreciation for India’s craft heritage, Gauri seamlessly blends traditional techniques with a contemporary voice. “You can’t separate our craft from our culture,” she says. “But what excites me is how we’re reimagining it through a global lens.”

She regularly collaborates with artisans and integrates indigenous materials—but always with a modern re-interpretation. “It’s a celebration of where we come from and where we’re headed,” she explains. Her work becomes a bridge—between past and present, regional and global.

Collaboration & Community

For Gauri, collaboration is more than strategy, it’s creative alchemy. A recent partnership with Emanate Home, for instance, allowed her to explore lighting as sculpture. “We explored how light can shape emotion and elevate a space’s energy,” she shares.

These synergies keep the work dynamic. “Collaboration pushes you to think differently, to evolve,” she reflects. And through these creative intersections, the GKD universe continues to expand with integrity and inventiveness.

Design Meets Business

When asked about the entrepreneurial side of running a design empire, Gauri doesn’t romanticize it. “Balancing creativity with commerce is a constant learning curve,” she admits. “The real challenge is scaling without losing the soul of your work.”

But for her, the reward is seeing that soul reflected across geographies. “It’s about staying true to your vision while building systems that support it,” she says. “When you see people resonate with your work, in cities you’ve never even been to, it’s deeply fulfilling.”

A Personal Space

Despite the many spaces she’s designed, one space remains close to her heart—her library. “If I could redesign one space in my home, it would be that,” she reveals. Her vision? A more immersive sanctuary. “Art, layered lighting, sound, I want it to feel like an escape. A world within a world.”

It’s a reminder that design is never static. “I’m always evolving,” she says, “and I think our spaces should too.”

For the Next Generation

To aspiring designers, Gauri offers advice that’s both grounded and galvanising: “Stay true to your vision, but stay open.” The industry may be competitive and ever-changing, but authenticity, she believes, will always stand out. “There’s room for every voice, as long as it’s real.”

Looking Ahead

With new collaborations on the horizon and creative possibilities unfurling, Gauri Khan is entering what she calls “an incredibly exciting phase.” But her vision remains rooted: to design spaces that move people, that linger in memory, and that ultimately, speak to something deeper.

Because at Gauri Khan Designs, it’s never just about the space. It’s about the story.
