In the leafy neighbourhood of Kothrud, Pune, this 1,500 sq. ft. residence by Studio GH unfolds as a contemporary home deeply anchored in Indian sensibilities. Designed by Ar. Gauri Patil and Ar. Heramb Patil, the project marks the studio’s second collaboration with the clients, a partnership built on shared values, emotional continuity, and a nuanced understanding of what home truly means. From the outset, the brief was never about a theme; it was about a feeling. The clients envisioned a home that would be modern yet rooted, traditional yet current, an unmistakably Indian environment that reflected memory, belonging, and ease.

Both homeowners grew up in spaces where design held purpose. Familiar elements like carved wooden furniture, bold hues, brass details, textured fabrics, and the beloved swing shaped their childhood homes. The swing, especially, carried nostalgic weight, tied to family, storytelling, and slow conversations with grandparents. For years, it remained a quiet desire, never fitting into the functionality of their previous residences. This apartment, the one they see as their long-term home and eventual retirement haven, offered the perfect opportunity to honour that memory with intention.

Materiality becomes the narrative thread that binds the home. Teak veneer, walnut finishes, brass accents, and curated textiles create a tactile vocabulary that feels authentic and grounded. The journey begins at the foyer where a sculpted wall detail, wooden console, and glimmering glass bead ceiling set a tone of subtle craftsmanship. Moving inward, the residence opens into fluid living and dining spaces anchored by the handcrafted wooden swing designed with a swivel back that reorients between the two zones. More than furniture, it becomes an emotional centrepiece that brings nostalgia into everyday moments.

Modern functionality and heritage inspired elements coexist seamlessly. The marble and brass dining ensemble exudes elegance without excess. The mandir, lined in a striking red interior, becomes a quiet moment of pause. The kitchen, with patterned flooring, clean forms, and warm finishes, balances precision and personality.

Each bedroom develops its own identity through layered colour, thoughtful proportion, and a restrained material palette that remains consistent with the home’s overarching ethos.

A Modern Indian Narrative is not a stylistic category, it is a return. A return to the values the clients grew up with, to the memories that shaped them, and to the design language that feels like home. Studio GH translates identity into space with clarity and grace, crafting a residence that honours the past while supporting the rhythms of contemporary living.
