Some homes are built; others are unearthed—like secrets whispered softly through stone, light, and time. Alabaster Home, a 6,000 sq. ft. residence in Ahmedabad by Studio Patternmaker, is not just a structure but a discovery. Designed by Principal Designer Parthavi Patel, it’s an immersive meditation on craft, heritage, and restraint. Awash in the soft glow of alabaster tones and rich in artisanal detail, this home reframes luxury through the lens of intimacy and timeless design.

Behind a stately iron gate, a winding stone path—an homage to Ahmedabad’s pol houses—leads to a quiet arrival. Sculpted greens, poised in stillness, set the rhythm before one encounters the façade: alabaster walls accented with charcoal-toned panels and wide panes of glass. It’s a modern gesture with roots in the past, echoing the delicate jali screens of old Gujarati homes, where filtered light and shifting shadows bring life to the built form.

Inside, the foyer is a tactile prelude. Checkerboard marble floors recall European classicism, while a hand-wrought iron gate blooms with floral motifs—its regional character offset by a vintage chandelier that glows above a custom-designed console. This moment, rich yet composed, captures the home’s prevailing ethos: quiet luxury informed by cultural memory.

Sculpted Serenity

The interiors unfold like a narrative, each space a chapter defined by nuance and materiality. In the formal living room, soaring ceilings, a sculptural marble fireplace, and Italian marble floors speak of restrained grandeur. The furniture softens the space—bouclé chairs and a sinuous bentwood sofa play against the room’s architectural rigor. The informal living zone offers contrast: brass wall sconces from Jainsons, studio artworks, and curated textures warm the space into a familial cocoon.

At the heart of the home, the dining area emerges as a sanctuary of light. A skylight opens up to the sky above, casting a natural spotlight on the marble dining table—hand-finished by artisans to celebrate the imperfections of the stone. French doors open onto manicured gardens, blurring the line between inside and out, while a bespoke chandelier lends glow and gravitas. Adjacent to this, the modular kitchen in dove grey tones is both utilitarian and sculptural, anchored by a marble island that quietly echoes the home’s design DNA.

Crafted for Reflection

The private quarters continue this rhythm of poise and craftsmanship. The master suite—bathed in muted whites and softened by plush textiles—features a brass-trimmed walk-in wardrobe and carefully selected artworks from Kalakari Haath. A seating nook, framed by a marble console and shifting natural light, invites pause and reflection.

The guest bedroom takes a more organic route with rattan, oak, and gold-toned finishes, while the parents’ suite channels understated opulence through layered textures and subtle form. The son’s bedroom, meanwhile, speaks a modernist dialect—light woods, clean lines, and a sense of spatial calm.

Even the entertainment room resists the expected. Engineered wood floors anchor the space, which includes a custom poker table and upholstered lounge chairs. The adjoining bath—lined with artisanal wallpaper and handcrafted mirrors—offers continuity in material sincerity. Perhaps most emblematic is the staircase: spiraling around a lift, it’s not merely a transition but a moment of architectural theatre, punctuated by vintage lighting and monochrome wallpaper that guide the gaze and the spirit upward.

The Art of Timelessness

Every detail in Alabaster Home has been designed, crafted, and curated with patience and poetry. From the delicately molded ceilings to bespoke joinery and the soft gleam of brass-and-glass pendant lights, the home celebrates the spirit of making. Locally sourced Italian marble, warm herringbone wooden flooring, and commissioned works from Jaipur Rugs, Kalakari Haath, and D’Decor imbue the space with depth and narrative.

In an era often defined by excess, Alabaster Home offers a quiet counterpoint—a study in elegance that doesn’t shout but lingers. It’s a space where light is a material, craftsmanship is revered, and heritage finds new form in the language of contemporary design. More than a residence, it is a soulful testament to how architecture, when wielded with sensitivity, can become a living poem.
